Book meme

July 28, 2006 7 comments

Book meme from Janet:
1. One book that changed your life?
Charles Darwin, The Origin of Species
2. One book you have read more than once?
Charles Darwin, The Origin of Species
3. One book you would want on a desert island?
The Complete Works of Plato
4. One book that made you laugh?
Anything written by ID supporters.
5. One book that made you cry?
Anything written by ID supporters.
6. One book you wish had been written?
Women: A Guide for the Perplexed
7. One book you wish had never had been written?
I don’t know if I would wish that any book had never been written. As Oscar Wilde said, books are neither immoral or moral, simply badly written or well-written. Unfortunately, people tend to be attracted to badly written books when forming (or strengthening) ideologies.
8. One book you are currently reading?
Robert Fisk, The Great War for Civilization
9. One book you have been meaning to read?
Stephen Jay Gould, The Structure of Evolutionary Theory – I started it, multiple times, but Gould’s prose is a little, eh, unwieldy.
I tag everyone!

Friday Free Association

July 21, 2006 5 comments

After last week’s rundown of my blog-sib’s Friday Features, I felt I’d better get and line and find something to do every Friday. Jason at Xenogene made me aware of Unconscious Mutterings, so I decided that was as good as anything. Deal is this: UM publishes ten words on Sunday and bloggers respond with the first though that comes into their mind. This week’s words are:

Give it a try (and feel free to post your answers/analysis in comments). My results are below the fold.

Smelling of old books

July 18, 2006 Comments off

Coturnix the Chronobiologist offers an oldest book meme. I guess my library is in as much disarray as his – especially as it’s split between home and office – so here’s what I have to hand and own that pre-dates 1900:

Not very much, I know. I like old books, I just can’t afford them!
After 1900, I’ve a first edition of D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson’s On Growth and Form if that counts for anything.

Should have seen this coming

Your Sesame Street Persona:
bert.jpg

Bert
You scored 68% Organization, 43% abstract, and 59% extroverted!
This test measured 3 variables.
First, this test measured how organized you are. Some muppets like Cookie Monster make big messes, while others like Bert are quite anal about things being clean.
Second, this test measured if you prefer a concrete or an abstract viewpoint. For the purposes of this test, concrete people are considered to gravitate more to mathematical and logical approaches, whereas abstract people are more the dreamers and artistic type.
Third, this test measured if you are more of an introvert or an extrovert. By definition, an introvert concentrates more on herself and an extrovert focuses more on others. In this test an introvert was somebody that either tends to spend more time alone or thinks more about herself.
You are very organized, both concrete and abstract, and both introverted and extroverted.
Here is why are you Bert.
You are both very organized. You almost always know where your belongings are and you prefer things neat. You may even enjoy cleaning and find it therapeutic. Bert is a big neat freak and gets quite annoyed when Ernie makes a big mess.
You both are sometimes concrete and sometimes abstract thinkers. Bert is probably a bit more concrete in his bottlecap collecting addiction and his love of the weather. He does show his abstract side when he sings and performs his “Doin’ The Pidgeon” song. You have a good balance in your life. You know when to be logical at times, but you also aren’t afraid to explore your dreams and desires… within limits of course.
You are both somewhat introverted. Bert is probably more introverted, because he spends most of his time either with Ernie or alone. Still he has no problem being around other people in his role as chairman of “The National Association of ‘W’ Lovers.” Like Bert, you probably like to have some time to yourself, but you do appreciate spending time with your friends, and you aren’t scared of social situations.

What horrible Edward Gorey Death will you die?

You will sink in a mire. You like to think you’re normal, but deep down you really just want to strip off your clothes and roll around in chicken fat.
Take this quiz!

Sinking in a mire is what I do every grading time, I fear.
Via the Grrrl who got it from Orac.

I can’t hear what you say

As usual, GrrlScientist started it

Your Theme Song is Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd

“There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.”

You haven’t been feeling a lot lately, and you think that’s a good thing.
The comfortable part is nice… but you should really work on numb.

I can live with that. Afarensis, Orac, GrrlScientist and I are all, apparently, introverted screw-ups. It’s all a little suspect though – PZ was characterized as “Heartbreaker, superflirt, player… you’ve been called all of those. You’re not that innocent, and you know that you have a super sexy vibe!”

ABCs of JML

I’m procrastinating a little as, like Janet, I have a stack of grading staring at me. The good news is that two of my three classes this semester are over, the bad is that there is still grading to be done, along with end of semester administrivia. Still, two weeks should see it all over and me hanging with a buddy in San Diego for a few days. So, to aid my procrastination, I’ll do the ABC meme thingie that Janet and RPM have already completed. See below the fold.

To ER is Lynch, apparently

April 23, 2006 1 comment

Which cell organelle are you?

The ER

You scored 50 Industriousness, 51 Centrality, and 15 Causticity!

You’re the Endoplasmic reticulum! The ER modifies proteins, makes macromolecules, and transfers substances throughout the cell. It has its own membrane, and translation of mRNA happens within it.

You tend to have two sides to you – sort of a jekyll and Hyde kind of story. One side of you tends to be rough and tumble, but also very useful. Your other side is less well-defined and slightly more mysterious.

My test tracked 3 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender:
free online dating free online dating
You scored higher than 21% on Industriousness
free online dating free online dating
You scored higher than 89% on Centrality
free online dating free online dating
You scored higher than 26% on Causticity

And Alex has a post on the ER.
