Two questions on Darwin(ism)
Recently historian Everett Mendelsohn talked about the “World Before Darwin” (see here or here) as part of the Darwin150 celebrations. As part of ASU’s “Ask A Biologist” program, I got to answer two questions that remained unanswered after Mendelsohn’s talk, namely
- If Darwin had never written Origin of Species, would we today be celebrating Wallace-ism?
- How did Darwin interrelate w/ discussions of Eugenics in those days. Did he develop a stance (personal conviction) on eugenics?
Look here for answers to those – and other – questions.
If Darwin had not written his book, someone else would have done shortly thereafter. He was not the only thinker investigating the subject.
