Abuse of Copernicus
October 13, 2009
From a review of Stephen Meyer’s latest attempt at science-by-popular-book:
Meyer’s book, if he can successfully carry the burden of proof, is probably one of the most important books since Copernicus challenged the prevailing scientific notion 566 years ago that the Earth was the center of the universe.
A tad hyperbolic, don’t you think?
*head explodes*
Naaah, they have a Newton, now they need a Copernicus…
Who’s this Copernicus guy?
Afarensis beat me to it: Meyer is Copernicus because Newton was already taken.
RBH and Afarensis : I presume you mean fig newton . . .
Not only hyperbolic, it’s wrong. The review credits Copernicus with publishing thirty years before he was born.

Shit I missed that and I’m supposed to be an expert on the publication of De revolutionibus!
It’s exactly 100 years before that publication so I assume that the reviewer can’t do simple arithmetic
Technically, I’d say it’s true. If Meyer met the burden of “proof,” it would be quite a feat.
The “if” kills him, though.
